Elementary School

Frequently Asked Questions

What time should my child get to school?

School begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Children are not allowed to arrive early. The tunnel will not be open until 8:00 a.m., so the children can safely cross Fourth Avenue. Please make arrangements for childcare/supervision in the morning before school. Also, please car pool or arrange childcare, so children will not be dropped off or arrive before 8:00 a.m. There is no supervision until this time because the teachers will be planning. Please respect this planning and preparation time, so we can provide your children with the best education possible. A well prepared teacher is essential to your child’s education.

What time should I pick my child up from school?

School is dismissed at 3:25 p.m. There is no supervision for students after school, so it is important that either you make arrangements to pick up your children promptly or the children go straight home and do not wait on campus for dismissal of Fourth Avenue or Yuma High School. If a student stays after school, we will be sure that either a teacher or the student contacts the parents for an immediate and safe ride home. Please make arrangements to pick up your child promptly.

What will be the consequences if my child misses a lot of school?

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of regular school attendance. Your child should be in school every day that he/she is physically able. Missing a lot of school will cause your child to fall behind in class work and academic learning. If a student is repeatedly absent without proper cause, we will notify the district truant officer.

If your child must be excused early from school, please send a note to school with your child on the morning of the early dismissal. Please include a time and the reason for the appointment. We ask that, when possible, you schedule medical and dental appointments outside of school hours. We will only release a student to his/her parents unless you have notified us of other arrangements.

Does the Yuma Elementary School provide bus transportation for Roosevelt students?

Yes. Roosevelt students do have the privilege of bus transportation. Please remember that it is a privilege, and it is every student’s responsibility to be sure that his/her behavior is appropriate. Every year in Arizona, there are numerous accidents with injuries involving school buses. We often trace the cause of these accidents to the disruptive behavior of the students on the bus. The district has established the following rules to help ensure the safety of your child:

  1. Stay seated at all times.
  2. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  3. Do not mark on the bus or cut seats.
  4. Keep all parts of body inside bus.
  5. No cussing.
  6. No loud noise.
  7. Keep the aisle clear.
  8. No throwing objects.

What will the consequences by if my child does not follow the school dress code?

The Yuma District #1 Governing Board voted to maintain the Dress Code for Roosevelt at the March 13, 2007 monthly meeting. This is in response to the survey where 87% of parents wished to continue with uniforms for the 2007-2008 school year. New students will have five days from enrollment to get the correct uniform. If your child does not follow the school Dress Code, the following actions will be taken:

  • 1st time: We will send a letter home.
  • 2nd time: We will send a letter home, and we will call the parent.
  • 3rd time: We will send a letter home, and the student will serve a detention.
  • 4th time: A Parent Liaison will take the child home to get the correct uniform.

What is the modified Monday schedule?

For the 2011-2012 school year, Roosevelt School will continue with a modified day on Mondays. Every Monday, we will be dismissing at 1:55 p.m. instead of the regular 3:25 p.m. dismissal. Even though we have shortened the day on Monday, Roosevelt still far exceeds the minimum number of hours required by state statues. The state requires 692 hours in class per year for First through fifth grade students. The children at Roosevelt are in class 866 hours per year. That equates to 47 more days per year than the state requires.  The state requires 346 hours of class time for Kindergarten. Kindergarteners  are in class for 866 hours.

Every minute the teacher is in class with your child is, of course, very important, but it is becoming increasingly necessary for the teacher to have the time to plan and collaborate with each other for the best interest of the student.

Every  MONDAY this year your child’s teacher will have the opportunity to:

  1. communicate with parents by preparing weekly reports.
  2. have more flexibility for scheduling conferences.
  3. meet with parents at least once each quarter.
  4. work with grade level staff on thematic units.
  5. prepare instructional materials, organize class centers and activities.
  6. interact with staff regarding curriculum.
  7. to meet with instructional aides for more cohesive planning.
  8. participate in teacher in-services.
