Frequently Asked Questions

What time should my child get to school?

School begins promptly at 8:50 a.m. Breakfast is from 8:15 until 8:45 a.m. Children are not allowed to arrive early, as we have no supervision before this time and your child’s safety is our priority. Also, teachers have meetings and planning time in the mornings before school starts to prepare and provide your children with the best education possible. A well-prepared teacher is essential to your child’s education.

We would greatly appreciate your support and understanding.

What will be the consequences if my child misses a lot of school?

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of regular school attendance. Your child should be in school every day that he/she is physically able. Missing a lot of school will cause your child to fall behind in class work and academic learning. If a student is repeatedly absent without proper cause, our office will be contacting you to set up a meeting to create a feasible plan to support you and your child.

If your child must be excused early from school, please send a note to school with your child on the morning of them leaving early, or bring a doctor’s note the following day. Please include a time and the reason for the appointment. We ask that, when possible, you schedule medical and dental appointments outside of school hours. We will only release a student to his/her parents or emergency contacts listed on file.

Will you allow my child to be picked up by a friend or sent to a different destination other than the normal one after school?

If you wish your child to go home a different way or to a destination different than he/she normally does, you must call the office and inform them of the changes so the office can inform your child’s teachers of the changes. Please call before 3:30 p.m. If you do not call, then your child will not be released to anyone not on the pick-up list nor allowed to go to another destination for safety reasons.

Can I visit my child’s school/classroom during school hours?

We would love to have our parents visiting our campus and classrooms but due to the circumstances at this time, we need to limit the number of visitors at our campus. We also need to emphasize the importance of following the CDC guidelines during the visit. We need to support each other and our students.

How often and when can I expect to have a parent-teacher conference with my child’s teacher?

We hold required parent conferences two times a year. This is a district procedure. The first conference is at the end of the first quarter, and the second conference is in the middle of the third quarter. Does Yuma Elementary School provide bus transportation for Roosevelt students?

Yes. Roosevelt students do have the privilege of bus transportation. Please remember that it is a privilege, and it is every student’s responsibility to be sure that his/her behavior is appropriate. Every year in Arizona, there are numerous accidents with injuries involving school buses. We often trace the cause of these accidents to the disruptive behavior of the students on the bus. The district has established the following rules to help ensure the safety of your child:

  1. Stay seated at all times.
  2. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  3. Do not mark on the bus or cut seats.
  4. Keep all parts of body inside bus.
  5. No cussing.
  6. No loud noise.
  7. Keep the aisle clear.
  8. No throwing objects.

What will the consequences be if my child does not follow the school dress code?

The Yuma District #1 Governing Board voted to maintain the dress code for Roosevelt at the March 13, 2007, monthly meeting. This is in response to the survey where 87% of parents wished to continue with uniforms for the 2007–2008 school year. New students will have five days from enrollment to get the correct uniform. If your child does not follow the school dress code, the following actions will be taken:

  • 1st time: We will send a letter home.
  • 2nd time: We will send a letter home, and we will call the parents.
  • 3rd time: We will send a letter home, and the student will serve a detention.

Dress Code

We wear the following uniforms:

  • Navy blue polo shirts for all boys and girls
  • Navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, skorts, skirts, jumpers, or dresses
  • Tennis shoes or buckled sandals with no more than a half-inch heel
  • No flip flops (this is a safety issue)

What is the modified Monday schedule?

For the 2023–2024 school year, Roosevelt School will continue with a modified (short) day on Mondays. Every Monday, students will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m. On Tuesdays through Fridays, students will be dismissed at 3:45 p.m. Why the short days on Monday? This gives teachers and staff time to attend trainings, workshops, meetings, and planning time.

Every Monday this year your child’s teacher will have the opportunity to:

  1. communicate with parents by preparing weekly reports.
  2. have more flexibility for scheduling conferences.
  3. meet with parents at least once each quarter.
  4. work with grade level staff on thematic units.
  5. prepare instructional materials, organize class centers and activities.
  6. interact with staff regarding curriculum.
